The Schussler Method
Dr. Schussler was a highly respected medical doctor in the mid 1800’s who was well
schooled in both traditional and horneopathic medicine. He developed would come to
be known as The Schussler Method for diagnosing and treating disease, which he
defined as a disturbance in the motion of the inorganic minerals in the body. This
disturbance or deficiency can be corrected through the proper application of one or
more of these inorganic minerals. Schussler’s method, which draws heavily on some
of the basic principles of homeopathy, has become widely practiced throughout the
world over the last 130 years.
What did the Schussler Method Borrow from
Homeopathy?
Homeopathy has been practiced in one form or another since the ancient
Greeks, and ‘modem’ homeopathy has been in existence since around
1800, 50 years before Schussler developed his biochemic method.
Schussler had discovered through his own research that when an imbalance of the
inorganic minerals of the body was present, only a very small dose of the deficient
mineral was required to restore the equilibrium. In fact, too large of a dose would be
ineffective in restoring the proper balance, because the body’s ability to process
large amounts of any particular mineral is impeded when an imbalance occurs. In an
unbalanced metabolism, large doses of minerals pass through the body unused,
because the disequilibrium has caused the very processes which assimulate and
distribute these minerals to stop working. From his homeopathic training Schussler
knew that he could create infinitesimal
doses of these inorganic salts through the proven methods of dilution and irituration.
More on these later.
Is Biochemics Homeopathy?
At the end of Schussler’s life when his method was already gaining widespread use,
he still insisted that biophemic treatment was something completely distinct from
homeopathy, Homeopathy, Schussler correctly claimed, was based, in part on
providing cures that would provoke, when given in large doses to a healthy person, ,
a physical response that mimics the symptoms of the ailment in a sick person. When
that same cure is given in very small doses to a sick person however, the substance
would provide a curative effect. This homeopathic principle, called the Law of
Similars, was well known to Schussler, but he showed that it plays a limited role in
biochemics. Furthermore, while homeopathy makes use of hundreds of different and
exotic substances for treatments, biochemics makes use of only the 12 simple
compounds that comprise the biochernic salts. The Schussler Method does not
introduce exotic compounds into the body to promote a cure; it simply provides
needed minerals to malnourished cells in a way that the cells can best utilize them.
In spite of these important if not subtle differences, the world of homeopathy has
grown up to include Schussler’ s method of biochemics, and it is taught along side
more traditional homeopathic treatments in schools around the world.
Preparation of the Biochernic infinitesimal Dose
Thc method for preparing Biocheniic salts, is nearly identical to the method used to
prepare many homeopathic remedies. The biochemic salts, while made from very
simple ingredients, are very time consuming to prepare and, if done to Schussler’s
specifications, made completely by hand. A single batch of Schussler salt is very
labor intensive, and takes up to two weeks to prepare. It must also precisely follow
detailed procedures for dilution and trituration, which are briefly explained below.’
First, one must dilute the given mineral by adding to it a digestible and neutral
substance. The substance most commonly used for the dilution is a milk sugar
powder (lactose). The inorganic mineral is first diluted in aratio of I part mineral to 10
parts lactose. This substance is triturated, a process that both grinds and mixes the
mineral with the lactose powder, for several hours by hand using a special mortar
and pestle. When the first trituration is complete, the new substance is again diluted
using the same 1:10 ratio using more lactose powder, and again triturated. After
repeating these steps several more times, the amount of the original inorganic
mineral exists in extremely minute quantities within the powder. Whatever infinitesimal
amount of the mineral that still remains in the new mixture exists as individual atoms
separated by relatively massive numbers of lactose atoms. This newly created
powder can either be administered in its loose form, or pressed into small tablets.
Precision and Accuracy
The overall production method is one that demands exacting measurements and
precise dilution and triturated techniques. If preformed improperly, the substance
produced will have little or no micro nutritive effects for the body. In fact, it is only
using scientific theory developed in the century can we even begin to understand
how the processes of dilution and trituration release the energies embedded within
the minerals themselves to produce the desired curative and nutritive effects.
How to Administer the Biochemic Salts
The Biochemic salts are administered orally. If taken in the tablet form, it is extremely
important that the user crush the tablet using the front teeth. In either the powder or
tablet form, the powder should be spread against the roof of the mouth using the
tongue. The salt has a slightly sweet and pleasant taste. The salt will dissolve fairly
quickly on the roof of the mouth and gradually work its way down the throat.
The reason why it is important to consume the salt in this way is that the body can
quickly assimilate the mineral as it is absorbed in the soft tissues of the palette. As it
is absorbed, the blood vessels are able to immediately make use of the nutrient,
distributing it to wherever the body needs it to restore good health.
Chronic vs Acute: How to determine the Correct dosage
intervals
For chronic symptoms, one tablet three times a day for two to three months is usually
sufficient to correct a salt imbalance.
For acute symptoms, one tablet evety 5 minutes for one hour, followed by one tablet
every waking hour for three days.
Traditional medicines and treatments
Since the amount of active ingredients is extremely small in biochemic salts, the
chance of drug interactions is near zero. It is perfectly acceptable to take biochemic
salts while pursuing other medical treatments and medicines.
For those people that are lactose intolerant, a reaction is possible. If a reaction
occurs, discontinuation of the biochemic method may be recommended.
Micro vs. Macro: The Body’s Mineral Nutrition
As we explained earlier, the amount of inorganic mineral contained in a dose of
biochemic salt is extremely small — much less than the body requires replenishing
the minerals that we lose during the normal functioning of our bodily processes. The
infinitesimal dose is designed to kick start the body at the cellular level when those
processes have become disrupted through physical and mental stress caused by
poor nutrition and illness.
Remember that when the body is stressed, it becomes unable to break down the
complex molecules consumed in the fonn of vegetables, fruit, cereals, meat and
dairy. The nutritive minerals contained in these foods are expelled from the body
without ever having been properly assimilated. The micro doses of minerals taken
with the biocheinic salts help the cells regain their natural state of health so that
normal digestion and processing can resume. When cellular health is restored, the
body can then begin to process food and drink to assimilate much larger quantities of
the minerals we need to remain healthy.
